CamWatch

Questions and answers

The things people most often ask about CamWatch.

How do the 10 free tries work?

Download CamWatch free and set it up: add your NVR, find your cameras and change settings as much as you like. None of that uses a try.

Each time you open CamWatch and watch your cameras counts as one try, however many cameras you look at. You get 10 free tries on each device, so you can check it on your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV separately. After 10 tries on a device, CamWatch asks you to unlock it. If it doesn't work with your system, you haven't paid anything.

How much does it cost?

A one-time US$4.99 (Apple shows the price in your local currency). There's no ongoing subscription and no renewals. It's yours!

Do I have to pay again for my iPad, Mac or Apple TV?

No. One purchase unlocks CamWatch on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, as long as they use the same Apple Account.

Is there a Windows version?

Not yet, but it's on the way. We'll announce it here when it's ready.

Can my family use it too?

Yes. CamWatch supports Family Sharing, so one purchase covers everyone in your Apple family group.

Can I watch remotely?

Yes and no. CamWatch is designed mainly for viewing your cameras on your local network, which is why it's so lightweight and fast. Remote viewing isn't built in, but you can watch your cameras remotely by installing third-party software such as Tailscale, a free, secure private-network app. CamWatch needs no changes; it works as if you were on site. See the how-to below.

How-to: watching remotely with Tailscale

  1. Install Tailscale on a device on the same network as your NVR that's always on (for example a NAS or a computer) and on your iPhone, and sign in to both with the same account.
  2. On that device, turn on Tailscale's "subnet router" for your local network (for example 192.168.1.0/24), then approve it in your Tailscale admin page.
  3. On your iPhone, switch Tailscale on and open CamWatch.

When you're watching remotely, CamWatch automatically uses a lighter picture so it starts quickly on mobile data.

Tailscale is a separate product. For help installing or setting it up, please see tailscale.com and contact Tailscale's support. We can't help with Tailscale, your router or your network.

Do I need an account or a subscription?

No. There's no CamWatch account, no cloud service and no subscription. CamWatch connects straight to your NVR.

How many cameras can I see?

Up to 16 cameras from one NVR or camera system.

Can I hear my cameras?

Yes, if your cameras have microphones. Open a camera full screen and tap the speaker button. On Apple TV, click the remote. Sound starts off each time, so CamWatch never surprises you.

Can I zoom in?

Yes. Pinch on iPhone and iPad, pinch or double-click on Mac. On Apple TV, click and hold the remote's touch surface to zoom, then slide your finger to look around.

Can I watch recordings?

Not at the moment. CamWatch is a live viewer. Your recordings stay on your NVR, and you can play them back with your NVR's own software.

Is my NVR password safe?

Your password is stored in your device's secure keychain, and it's only ever sent to your own NVR. It never goes to us or anyone else.

It says it can't find my cameras. What now?

See the support page for the common fixes, or check that your system is on the compatibility list.
